BGP Hijacking: In today’s world a real concern


Security Week published a recent article on Border Gateway Protocol Hijacking titled “Russian Telco Hijacked Internet Traffic of Major Networks – Accident or Malicious Action?” In today’s crisis world, this particular topic and event, whether accidental or malicious, can prove to be a critical event for anybody conducting business today.


Before the pandemic crisis, business across the internet was a large part of life in the business world. Emails, teleconferencing, wire transfers, transferring of funds between financial institutions; all of these things traverse across the internet. With this type of event, a nefarious cyber actor, whether criminal or nation-state, can acquire your data and information without having to try to break into or infiltrate your network.


Now today, the world business has changed to where even more business is having to be conducted via virtual means. New approaches to using the internet and virtual tools are being developed to allow businesses to operate within an increase virtual environment. Businesses need to be smart because now not only do you have to secure your own networks, but you have to make sure the tools you are using to send your data outside of your networks is secure. Email and teleconferencing are two of the biggest methods of interaction. Research the tools you are using to conduct your business and make sure it is secure and meets your information security needs.
